Ryan Mowbray has been a Physical Therapist for over 15 years. He has his Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from California State University, Sacramento, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Sonoma State University. To support patient care, he holds certifications as an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Selective Functional Movement Assessment Professional (SFMA 1 & 2), and Functional Movement Screen Certified Professional (FMS). Ryan has a range of experience working with professional athletes (49ers, Warriors, SF Ballet, and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame ), weekend warriors, and patients simply looking to move without pain.

Ryan has an athletic background, playing team sports in high school and college, then transitioning to trail running, road and mountain biking, CrossFit, and snow sports. He believes activity at any level is core to well-being and prides himself in helping athletes optimize movement to achieve their functional goals.

Ryan has observed that traditional injury care and recovery are often focused only on the place of injury. For some patients, this may be adequate. But for many, especially those with recurring pain or injury, finding the cause of the pain, not just the source, takes a more holistic approach. Ryan assesses and treats the whole person. First, getting to the root of the injury, then retraining movement patterns, and finally, devising a strengthening plan to allow his patients to return to their activities without pain. Ryan also constructs a bridge between physical therapy and sports performance, offering one-on-one training post-injury.

TESTIMONIALS

The thing I appreciated the most about my rehabilitation experience with Ryan was his ability to find ways to treat my symptoms and ease some of the pain I was feeling in the moment while simultaneously addressing the cause of the injury and working toward improved strength and function which lead to long term healing and injury prevention in the future.

He also found ways for me to modify and recalibrate my activities during rehabilitation so that I didn’t continue to lose ground in other areas in the meantime.

That balance was key to my recovery.

-Jill McCormick, SRJC Swim Coach, Swimmer, Crossfit Athlete

Ryan is my hero. After being a competitive athlete, my body began breaking down. Ryan helped me through two knee surgeries, including a full knee replacement and a rotator cuff surgery.

At one point after the knee replacement surgery, I couldn’t fully bend or straighten my knee. I was depressed and in pain. Ryan quickly diagnosed the issue as a pinched nerve behind the knee. He used cupping, which Ryan had picked up through his specialist training and bam, I was back to walking (and eventually hiking, etc).

Through his kindness, intelligence and expertise, Ryan healed me and got me back to myself. We are forever grateful for Ryan and recommend him to anyone who’s trying to heal or improve their body.

I started to see Ryan due to an ankle injury that affected my running performance and his full body approach to healing and building has helped my body so much! I have a better understanding of running and training mechanics and how my body specifically responds to certain approaches of therapy. His instructions for strengthening and rebuilding are effective and very easy to follow/understand. I've learned so much in such a short time and have seen major improvements in my healing/recovery time, strength, and running form. Highly, highly recommend Ryan for endurance athletes or anyone who takes their athletic training seriously.

-Kirsten Arnett, Runner

Before I started seeing Ryan for physical therapy, I was told that I may not be able to run long distance anymore. My hip flexors were in so much pain that I was having a hard time moving after long runs. Ryan helped with manipulation techniques and helped me strengthen the parts of my body that were weak and causing my hip pain. Months after seeing him I ran a 50 miler, 100k and then my first 100 miler and I owe it all to him! I still go to him frequently for cupping, active release therapy and general maintenance, he is the absolute best!

-Dominique Chevalier, Ultrarunner

Ryan is extremely knowledgeable, about what it takes to get an athlete back on track after injury. He doesn’t just treat the specific injury, but understands how the body works together and I returned to running, stronger than I was before injury.

-Tim Ricard, Cyclist, Runner, Splitboarder

When I hurt my back before my marathon last year, 2 friends recommended Ryan to me as their go-to physical therapist. Now I go to Ryan for everything, and I would recommend him to any friend.

-Dylan Peterson, Runner, Cyclist
